The Ted Parnell Scholarship Fund

 

The Ted Parnell Scholarship Fund was established to honour the life and work of Ted Parnell (1947 – 1981).  Ted was a sensitive and committed individual who contributed greatly to conservation and environmental interest in the Yukon. Ted’s life and work reflected his keen environmental values and love of the north and its people. 

 

The Ted Parnell Scholarship

The Yukon Conservation Society offers an annual scholarship of $500 to a student pursuing any aspect of environmental studies.  This scholarship will be awarded to a student demonstrating outstanding interest and motivation in the environmental field.  Interests pertaining to northern environments such as wildlife, ecology, renewable resources, energy, and environmental education are appropriate areas for eligibility.

Application Requirements

Applicants must be Yukon residents and should be entering or currently enrolled in a post-secondary school program (excluding graduate work).  Proof of acceptance will be required before the scholarship is awarded.

Application deadline: June 30.

Please include:

    1. A few paragraphs outlining environmental concerns in your locality and your ideas on how these problems can be solved, outlining both public and government responsibilities
    2. A description of your interest and involvement in the environmental field
    3. Proposed course of study and goals for that study

Funding Criteria and Application Information

Goal:
The goal of the Yukon Environmental Training Fund is to support training, retraining, upgrading and improving of occupational skills of those employed by Yukon's environmental groups or individuals working on environmental issues and activities in the Yukon.

Criteria:
Applications must meet the Key Criteria (1, 2 and 3) to be considered for funding. By meeting Additional Criteria (4, 5 and 6), an application may gain extra merit. The additional criteria are not mandatory, and may not apply to all training opportunities.

  1. Applicants must demonstrate that they meet YETF objectives as set out by the Yukon government: "Funds are to be used to enhance the skills and employability of individuals employed by environmental groups in Yukon or individuals working on environmental issues or activities in Yukon."
  2. Applicants must indicate an affiliation (ie. employee, volunteer, board member, member) with a Yukon environmental non-governmental organization (ENGO). Recognizing that some individuals may not be affiliated with one of these groups, we alternatively ask for two references, one of which must come from a Yukon ENGO.
  3. Applicants must demonstrate capability of budgeting and accounting for eligible costs supported by YETF.
  4. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate how the training opportunity will be transferable or deliverable to a broader number of Yukoners.
  5. Applicants are encouraged to pursue training that draws from local resources (courses, instructors, etc). For example, where appropriate, applicants are encouraged to bring trainers in to deliver a course to a larger audience, rather than send one individual Outside.
  6. Preference may be given to applications that expand funding opportunities or leverage funding (ie. matched funding, seed funding, additional funding sources etc) and do not rely exclusively on YETF support.

Applicants are invited to submit applications at any time. The YETF committee meets as required to consider applications. Allow two to three weeks for processing.

GERRY COUTURE STEWARDSHIP AWARD

Deadline November 10th, 2009

The purpose of this award is to foster public awareness of and appreciation for the personal dedication required to conserve and manage our natural resources.

A Yukon resident who demonstrates outstanding personal dedication to natural resource conservation and management, and who demonstrates fearlessness and persistence in the face of adversity, will be chosen to be the recipient of a Gerry Couture Stewardship Medal, and $1000 cash prize.   

A Gerry Couture Stewardship Award Committee is now accepting Nominations for the 1st Award to be awarded this December, 2009.
