We’re Setting Sail!
The Yukon Conservation Society is launching a Whitehorse-wide Water Conservation Education Campaign in the spring, summer, and fall of 2010 to help promote water (and energy) conservation through reduction of household water consumption.
We’ll be sailing to you through:
- Articles in the local Media
- Information inserts located inside your utility bills
- Classrooms: high school water workshops
- exploring the economic, environmental, and social costs of residential water use. Students will gain an appreciation and understanding of the energy demands associated with individual water consumption, while exploring water supply and demand issues within the global and local context.
- Your Back Yard: Xeriscaping gardening contest:
- Xeriscaping is a method of gardening or landscaping to minimize water use through techniques such as mulching, strategic water use, and using native plants. YCS will organize an online photo contest promoting local xeriscaped gardens with first, second and third prizes of local, low water-use gardens. YCS will also promote and distribute “Low-Water Lawn” signs to participating Whitehorse residents.
- Your Streets: Whitehorse Yellow Fish Road™ Day
- Community events where participants paint yellow fish next to storm drains and distribute fish shaped brochures to nearby households to let residents know why the yellow fish have appeared. The yellow fish serve as a reminder to properly dispose of any hazardous household chemicals and to use environmentally-friendly alternatives which won’t wash away easily with rain.
- Here's a map of the City of Whitehorse storm outfalls to the Yukon River.
Here's how you can help:
- Help Spread the Word about Water Conservation!
- Send people to this website
- Volunteer for a Whitehorse Yellow Fish Road™ Day
- Help paint yellow fish next to storm drains and distribute fish shaped brochures to nearby households to let residents know why the yellow fish have appeared.
- Help us with research - - topics may include:
- xeriscaping
- connection between water use and energy efficiency
- How do other jurisdictions encourage water conservation?
- bleeders to prevent pipes freezing - drawbacks, alternatives and retrofits
- leakage from water pipes – how serious is this problem, and how can it be addressed?
- Teach your kids:
- Contact us about helping to deliver educational water workshops to kids age 4 – 10, this summer, as part of YCS’ Ed-Ventures program. Help kids understand the importance of water conservation, and explore how it’s done.
- Practice what you preach: Make Use of the Water- Saver Tips!
